How Rachelle acquired the Inn

As a teenager, I used to walk by Aurora Staples Inn and dream about this home.  I’d wonder what it looked like inside and about all the people who once lived there. I grew up four houses away from Aurora Staples Inn, on Mulberry Street and even worked at a couple Bed and Breakfasts myself.  I asked the previous owners of Aurora Staples Inn if they would sell it to me.  They said, “YES!” After negotiations, everything fell into place and I had exactly enough money for the down payment. This was an answer to prayer!

Location, Location, Location…Is one of the reasons this Inn is popular.  It is located in Stillwater, the birthplace of Minnesota. This Queen Anne Victorian overlooks the St. Croix River from some rooms and was built on a hill. It’s been a part of Stillwater’s history for over 131 years. It’s unique architecture is eye-catching and the inside is breathtaking.  The Inn takes you back in time.

About the Innkeepers, Rachelle and Eddie:
Rachelle graduated from the College of St. Catherine in 2003 with a B.S. in Education (kindergarten-8th grade). She loves to read and write poetry.  She is currently finished a poetry book.  One is called, “A Rose in a Teacup and Other Poems,” by Rachelle Nevaeh Rose and the second book will be coming out in the next couple of months.   She is a former teacher, gymnastics coach and salsa dancer.  Rachelle loves tea, nature, hiking, running, Zumba, listening to music and traveling.
Eddie, her husband, is a native to Philadelphia and He enjoys cooking, music, singing, and helping Rachelle at the Inn.

History

Aurora Staples Inn logo

Aurora Staples Inn was built in 1892, during the Lumber Boom.  This home was a gift from Isaac Staples to his youngest daughter Aurora & her husband, Adolphus Hospes, a civil war veteran, one of the six survivors from the Battle of Gettysburg.  He was founder of the Last Man’s Club from Company B.  Aurora & Adolphus had three children: Olivia, Louis & Eva.

One of Stillwater’s Pioneers, Isaac Staples, arrived in Stillwater in 1853.  Legend has it that he stood over the bluffs of the St. Croix River over-looking the great white pine forest & exclaimed, “I can cut those trees down,” and he did.  He had some help from Eastern investors.  He went on to become a Lumber Barron & one of Minnesota’s first Millionaires.  He was also involved in many enterprises such as banking, flour milling, saloons, steamboats, 3,000 acres of farms and even race horses!

The architecture is unique to the Boom Town Period which is seen in different types of wood used throughout the home.  You will find bird’s eye maple, pine, oak, ornate inlaid flooring and wood carvings featuring Isaac Staples signature oak leaves and acorns around the fireplaces and doors.  There are leaded glass windows, wood & coal burning fireplaces, pocket doors, a servant’s stair case.  Originally, the kitchen was in the basement & the third level was a ballroom.  A beautiful open staircase leads to four guest rooms.  There are flower gardens in back and a Carriage House, which is renovated and made into a guest suite.  The St. Croix Suite was Aurora’s bedroom until 1924, Her original dresser is still there and her bed is currently in the Gallery Room.

Our Inn offers a unique getaway experience with a balance of period décor, romantic ambience & modern amenities.  All rooms have gas-fireplaces, jetted tubs, soft sheets, comfortable beds, A/C, and televisions.  We now offer a delicious breakfast to the Lowell Inn, Mon petit Cheri or Oasis Cafe.

We invite everyone to visit one of the oldest towns in America where you can enjoy: old buildings, shops, fine restaurants, Breweries, Award Winning Wineries, lunch & dinner cruises, kayaking, art galleries, wedding venues, gondola rides, Segway & trolley tours, biking & walking trails, cooking classes & parks.  All with a great view of the St. Croix River.  Stillwater hosts many events such as Lumber Jack Days, a 4th of July celebration with fireworks over the river, gondola races, art fairs, Oktoberfest, Ice Castles, hot air balloon rides and much more!  Stillwater is a great place for a weekend getaway!  Be sure to check out our Inn.  We welcome you to have a unique experience in Stillwater!

Breakfast and Our Health & Safety Protocols

Due to COVID-19 outcomes, supplies and rising costs, Aurora Staples Inn has made the decision to move from a Bed & Breakfast to more of an AirBnB model. We are no longer are serving breakfast or wine/beer trays in our room packages. Instead we will be offering a gift certificate to one of the fabulous dining establishments in Stillwater for you to enjoy when you check in.

Enjoy a delicious breakfast at the following restaurants with your reservation:

Monday-Tuesday: Guests will receive a gift card to Oasis Cafe or Mon Petit Cheri (a $30 value)
Wednesday-Sunday: Guests will receive a breakfast voucher for the Historic Lowell Inn (a $30 value)

Safety continues to be our first priority.  We aim to protect our employees and guests, so we ask if you have an existing reservation and you are feeling sick or have symptoms of COVID19, please reschedule or cancel.  We continue to have high standards of service and health protocols.  We have increased cleaning and sanitizing protocols, etc.  Because of this, we cannot allow an early check-in. Please respect our check-in hours.

If anyone is ill or becomes ill at the Inn, we will ask you to leave immediately for the health and safety of our guests and staff.

We now offer Contactless Check-in and Contactless Check-outs – we’ll contact you within a few days before your reservation with an entry passcode number and instructions will be in their rooms. This is a new service we started offering since the COVID-19 Pandemic and it’s been a hit with our guests.

Because we are a small Inn in a small town, with a handful of rooms, we must limit the number of guests per room to two.  Wedding parties and receptions are currently on hold.

We hope to see you soon!  Thank you for your continued support and understanding.

– Rachelle, Innkeeper/Owner
